Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising (PlayStation-3)
System: PlayStation-3
Posted: 03/28/2009 at 15:22PM
Size: 512MB
Language: English
Type: Roleplaying
Discription: I didn't like ArmA, and I never played the original Operation Flashpoint. Now that I've said that, you've either left because you're a hardcore military sim fan, or you've stuck around because you're a reasonable person who realizes that you're about to read the thoughts of someone who probably doesn't share your idea of fun. Or maybe I do, and you'll share in my dismay at what I played when I recently went hands-on with Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising. People call the recent Ninja Gaiden games hardcore because they're really difficult, while others call MadWorld hardcore because it's over-the-top gory. When I say Dragon Rising is hardcore, I mean it in the I'm-so-realistic-that-I'm-utterly-unforgiving-and-am-the-videogame-equivalent-of-having-someone-step-on-my-fingers-for-pleasure sort of way. From the moment you boot it up, you're doing what an everyday soldier does: traversing long distances with nothing but the quiet of your surroundings to comfort you, and dying when you're randomly shot from some obscene distance. When you enter into combat, you -- and your teammates -- can (and often will) die from a single well-placed shot by the enemy A.I., and if you aren't shot to death, you'll find yourself needing to apply bandages in order to keep yourself from bleeding out. The end result is a game where caution is everything: You'll find yourself moving very, very slowly, and using your men to do most of the fighting. Normally, this wouldn't bother me -- as I loved playing G.R.A.W. and Rainbow Six Vegas this way -- but since your men die so damn easily, it gets frustrating fast.
